Sony of Canada is committed to improving its environmental practices at its operations across the country.
Our corporate offices are GEMS ISO 14001 certified.
Sony Canada environmental objectives:
- To divert 85% of the waste generated at Sony Canada operations from landfill by fiscal year 2010
- To develop product stewardship programs to maximize the diversion of Sony products from landfill by making it as easy to recycle a Sony product as it is to purchase one.
- To reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% of 1999 levels by end of 2010 through reducing energy reduction activities
Operational performance in Fiscal Year 2007 (Apr07-Mar08):
- Energy consumption was reduced by 3% since fiscal year 1999 (Apr99-Mar01) with a corresponding 6% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This was achieved in a period that experienced a 48% increase in business activity.
- We have re-lamped our warehouses for more energy efficient lighting and placed engineering controls on our heating and cooling systems to reduce our energy use.
- We have placed controls on our sprinkler system to minimize water use
- Reduced waste generation by 24% since fiscal year 2003 (Apr03-Mar04).
- Diverted 76% of waste from landfill. The amount diverted included recycling:
- 102,031 kg of electronics
- 368 kg of alkaline batteries
- 794kg of rechargeable batteries and cellular (Call2Recycle program)
- 626 fluorescent lamps
- Launched the Notebook Trade-in Program
- Assisted in the launch of provincial electronics recycling programs in British Columbia and Nova Scotia
