Sony Canada’s recycling & trade-in programs work to divert end-of-life products from landfills. Sony Canada’s programs include:

Product Stewardship Program

Sony Canada is playing a leadership role working with government, industry partners and stakeholders in developing provincial programs across Canada to collect and recycle electronics in an environmentally responsible manner. These programs provide a convenient, province-wide collection infrastructure that allows consumers and businesses to recycle electronics. Stringent environmental standards ensure the safe recycling and recovery of these products. Sony’s recycling program and the provincial programs work to provide Canadians with more recycling options than ever before.

These programs are currently operating in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia. In 2008 a stewardship plan was submitted to the Ontario government for review and approval.

Sony Recycling Program – Customer FAQ

Q:  Why do you only have limited number of drop off locations across Canada?

A:  We are launching our expanded program with drop-off locations in almost every province.   We will be working with our partners to increase the number of locations across Canada as quickly as possible, to provide convenient access to recycling for our customers.  In fact, we are working towards doubling the number of non-retail collection sites in 2 years.

Q:  Why can’t Sony Style retail stores accept ALL Sony products?

A.  The Sony Style retail stores have limited space available and even have to store some product inventory offsite.  For that reason, they can only handle small, handheld products.

Q. What Sony products will not be accepted for recycling?

A.  Sony is proud to offer recycling of all its products.

Q:  If I bring back a non-Sony product to a Sony take-back point, will you collect it?

A:  At this time we are putting our efforts into recycling All Sony products.

Q:  How can you ensure environmentally responsible recycling of products?

A:  Our recycling partner, GEEP, uses processes that conform with Sony’s recycling standards, to ensure materials are processed in a responsible manner that safeguards the environment and worker health & safety.  Sony’s standards are based on the EPSC Electronics Recycling Standard. More information on that standard is available at www.epsc.ca

Q:  Where are the electronics parts recycled? Is it in Canada or overseas?

A. All the materials are processed in Canada into base commodities and are then used in processes to produce new products.

Q:  What about reuse?

A: Sony strongly advocates that consumers maximize the usefulness of their products through reuse. Consider giving functioning products to family members, friends, or donating them to second-hand stores and charities. The Sony recycling program offers an environmentally responsible alternative to landfill when reuse is no longer an option.

Q. What will happen to any personal information left on computer hard drives?

A: All the collected products will go through shredding processes in order to separate the various materials to be recovered (metals, plastic, glass).  During this process, information will be destroyed.  However, it is the responsibility of customers to delete personal information and images stored on the products prior to dropping them off for recycling.

Q: What is Sony doing to make their products more environmentally friendly?

A: Our product designers continually find ways to minimize the environmental footprint of Sony products by increasing energy efficiency, increasing recycled content, and eliminating potentially hazardous materials such as lead solder.

Q: My municipality already has an electronics recycling program and I noticed Sony lists their collection site at the same location.  Is this the same program?

A: Many municipalities have demonstrated leadership by implementing their own electronics recycling program and should be congratulated for doing so.  Sony has entered into commercial arrangements with the operators at some of those sites so that all Sony products can be collected and managed at Sony’s expense, not the municipality’s.  It is because of the municipality’s leadership in setting up these waste management locations that Sony is able to deliver this program at those locations.

Q: My municipal electronics recycling program currently does not accept televisions.  Can I still bring a Sony television to the Sony collection site that is at the same location as my municipal electronics recycling location?

A:  Yes.  Sony will accept all Sony products, including Sony televisions.  When at the electronics recycling location, simply bring your Sony television to the Sony collection area.  Please check with your municipality before bringing non-Sony products to ensure their existing program will accept them.
