Q. What is Memory Stick and what can I use it for?  
A. Memory Stick, a small-sized flash memory format, is a platform for personal networking. With Memory Stick Media a wide variety of digital content, from photos and computer data to music and moving images, can all be stored on a single stick and then easily transferred among a wide variety of products. Memory Stick Media are available with a range of storage capacities, from 16MB to 1 GB.

A. Q. What is Memory Stick PRO technology?  
A. Memory Stick PRO is the evolution of the Memory Stick format. It offers increased capacity and increased transfer speed over the original Memory Stick media. The advanced technology, working with optimized Memory Stick PRO format-compatible devices, enables various new applications including real-time recording and playback of high-resolution moving images. Memory Stick Pro is compatible with selected Memory Stick Slots.

Q. What is the difference between Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro?  
A. Memory Stick Pro has been developed as the evolution of the original Memory Stick technology and offers increased capacity and transfer speed. While both are the same size and weight, Memory Stick Pro offers new capabilities such as real-time recording and playback of high-resolution moving images.

 

Capacity, transfer speeds, and other Memory Stick PRO media features vary by and are dependent upon the design of host hardware devices.

Q. Will Memory Stick PRO media work in all Memory Stick compatible products?  
A. Similar to the initial launch of the DVD platform, some existing Memory Stick compatible products do not have the capability to read Memory Stick PRO media. However, Memory Stick PRO compatible products will be optimized to read both Memory Stick (16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 128MB x 2) and Memory Stick PRO media.

A. For some VAIO computer models a patch can be downloaded to enable Memory Stick PRO format compatibility. Memory Stick Pro media features vary by and are dependent upon the design of host devices.

Q. Are all VAIO computer models Memory Stick Pro compatible?  
A. Owners of VAIO computers that are not Memory Stick Pro compatible have three options:

1) Download a patch that will allow you to use Memory Stick Pro with your VAIO.

i) The patch is effective with selected VAIO computer models. Click here to determine if the patch will work with your VAIO computer.
ii) If the patch will work with your computer model, download the MS Pro Patch here.

2) Purchase a Memory Stick Pro Compatible Adaptor. Sony offers a variety of Memory Stick Pro compatible adaptors that will allow you to use Memory Stick Media with a PC via a USB port, floppy drive, or through the PC card slot.

3) Utilize the new 128MB x 2 Memory Stick format to save 2 x 128MB data on one Memory Stick.

Q. Are current CLIÉ™ handheld models compatible?  
A. As of April 1st 2003 there are no Memory Stick Pro compatible CLIÉ™ handhelds available in Canada. However, the new 128MB x 2 Memory Stick format can be used in all Memory Stick Slots and offers the ability to save 2 x 128MB data on one Memory Stick.

A. Depending on the product, an error message may appear.

Q. How much content can a 1GB Memory Stick PRO media hold?  
A. A 1GB Memory Stick PRO media can hold:
• Approximately sixteen CDs (calculated at 64MB per CD)
• 360 JPEG images with 5.0-Megapixel quality (fine mode compression) = Digital images equivalent to 10 rolls of film
• Approximately 24 minutes of DVD quality video
• Approximately 6 hours of MPEG4 (384Kbps) moving images

Q. What is Memory Stick with Memory Select Function?  
A. Memory Stick with Memory Select Function contains two 128MB memory units. It is a higher-capacity solution for users of current Memory Stick media, allowing 2 x 128MB of storage on a single Memory Stick.

Q. What is Memory Stick Duo?  
A. Memory Stick Duo is a smaller-sized Memory Stick media designed for ultra-compact devices such as cell phones and Network Walkman. It offers all the features of current Memory Stick media - at less than half the size (31 x 20 x 1.6 mm).

Q. Is it possible to use the Memory Stick Duo in a slot for the standard-size Memory Stick?  
A. Yes. By attaching the supplied adapter to the Memory Stick Duo, the size of Memory Stick Duo becomes the same as that of the standard-size Memory Stick.

Q. Why didn't you introduce a smaller-size media when Memory Stick media was first launched?  
A. Memory Stick was designed as a removable media to create a network linking various types of hardware. Its length was designed to be the same as that of the familiar AA battery. Memory Stick Duo media has now been designed to meet the needs of new portable and ultra-compact products. With use of its supplied adaptor, Memory Stick Duo is compatible with standard-size Memory Stick slots.

A. Both media offer an easy way to transfer and share files, including data, images, music and video among a variety of electronic devices. However, MagicGate contains copyright protection technology, which is incorporated into the MagicGate Memory Stick media and MagicGate Memory Stick-compatible devices. This technology enables the transfer of copyright-protected music files.

MagicGate copyright protection technology complies with the standards set by SDMI (Secure Digital Music Initiative), a forum of companies and organizations that is working to establish industry-standard specifications to protect copyrights related to digital music.

MagicGate Memory Stick media handles both protected and non-protected content on the same media.

Q. Is it possible to use MagicGate Memory Stick media in PC card adapters and floppy disk adapters designed for current Memory Stick media?  
A. Yes, just like the current media, MagicGate Memory Stick media is able to transfer non-copyright-protected content. However, PC card and floppy disk adapters are not designed to transfer copyright-protected content.
